The Missouri State University Ice Bears, a Division 1 member of the American Collegiate Hockey Association, swept the annual meeting against the University of Missouri Tigers 10-1 and 4-0 in front of sellout crowds at Mediacom Ice Park on Jan. 22-23.
The Ice Bears have won eighth straight games against their instate rival dating back to the 2012-13 season. Richard Westcott and Travis Barrett scored two goals each while Alex Turin, Marshall Gevers, Connor Millard, Brendan McClew and Austin Purdy had single goals in game one. It’s the fourth game Missouri State scored double-digit goals this season.
It was also a night to honor former Ice Bears General Manager Stan Melton, who stepped down from day-to-day management of the team in July 2015, and helped bring hockey to Springfield. During a pregame dedication ceremony Jan. 22, the East Rink at Mediacom Ice Park was renamed "The Stan Melton Ice Rink."
Mitch Fernsler turned aside 39 shots earning the shutout in game two. Travis Barrett extended his 4-game goal scoring streak with a power play goal 15 minutes into the first period. Barrett has 7 goals and 7 assists in those games. Andrew Kovacich also extended his 5-game scoring streak with his 25th goal of the season at 15:44 of the third period. Kovacich has 10 goals and 7 assists in five games. Brennan Anderson and Turin also netted goals.
Mediacom Ice Park will be busy with three teams playing on both rinks this weekend. Missouri State's Division 1 team hosts the Illinois State Redbirds while the Division 3 team faces Illinois State's Division 2 team and the Springfield Express of the WSHL will host the Dallas Snipers.
Springfield plays Dallas at 6 pm Friday followed by Missouri State at 9:15 pm on the Stan Melton Ice Rink while the Division 3 team plays on the West Rink at 10:30 pm. On Saturday, the Express will play at 3 pm and the Ice Bears follow at 7 pm. The Division 3 team will be on the West Rink at 8 pm.
Reserved seats for Ice Bears’ games are $9 with $8 general admission and $4 student general admission tickets available at the door the day of the game. Tickets can also be purchased in advance through Missouri State Tix by calling 417-836-7678, or 888-476-7849.
